From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The War Memorial Natatorium is located on the beaches of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii on the slopes of Diamond Head. Built in Hawaiian beaux arts architecture, it was completed in 1927 as a memorial to the local soldiers that had died in World War I for the various allied countries. The centerpiece of the memorial is the entrance arch featuring four stone eagles. The War Memorial Natatorium is a functional memorial and was used as a popular recreational gathering for locals and tourists, alike. Inside the memorial is a 100 meter by 40 meter salt water swimming pool used by olympians Duke Kahanamoku, Buster Crabbe and Johnny Weissmuller.
The natatorium was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
