[edit] High School Golf

Although having declined recently, the legend of the Wapello High School golf team grew considerably at the beginning of the decade, when the team made four consecutive trips to the state tournament from 2000-2003. The team was crowned state champion in 2000, runner-up in 2003, and finished 4th in both 2001 and 2002. Paul Huddle, the core of the team throughout his career there, was state medalist in 2001, runner-up in 2000 and 2002, and fifth place in 2003. In 2004, the last hold-overs from the state tournament days, Brian Marshall and Nick Ohde, ended Wapello's chances and their golf team's glory days. Ohde finished his golfing career with a pitiful 88 at the sectional qualifier at Flint Hills, a.k.a. "FlintRock" in Burlington, IA. After losing the rest of his golf balls to errant shots, Ohde finished his round with a pink ball after declaring triumphantly on the final hole, "Gentleman, I will be playing a PINK lady."
