Tyne and Wear Metro List of Tyne and Wear Metro stations |
Wansbeck Road is a station on the Green Line of the Tyne and Wear Metro, which opened May 10, 1981. It is built on an embankment above Wansbeck Road. A second concrete span was added to the original single-track bridge in 1978-1979 as the Metro was being built. The platforms are on opposite sides of the road.
The line was originally part of the Ponteland Railway, opened in 1905, and the station is close to the point at which it crossed over the now-dismantled Fawdon Waggonway. The bridge, west of the station, is still in use as a pedestrian underpass.
Regent Farm First School is situated on one side of the road. On the other there is a housing estate and a small shopping centre (which includes Co-Op and Kwik Save stores).
[edit] Ticketing anomalies
Different zonal fare systems are used for Metro single tickets and inter-modal Transfare tickets, which means that for a number of journeys a Transfare may actually be cheaper than a standard Metro-only ticket.
