[edit] Reverse Backhand
Wang uses a Chinese penhold grip. He is a pioneer in the penhold grip with his revolutionary reverse backhand move, which he uses exclusively. He frequently uses this technique to "loop drive" the ball over the net when receiving serves, or simply as a counter driving technique in a rally.
[edit] Advantages
Having this technique dramatically increases the backhand offensive power of a penhold player. The unorthodox movement of the reverse backhand can seriously upset opponents. The heavy 4-10 o'clock spin on the stroke often causes opponents to miss the table with the counterdrive. While players are getting increasingly used to this move, Wang Hao has also improved his consistency and power of this move over the years.
[edit] Disadvantages
Due to physical constraints, Wang Hao's technique has a slower recovery rate than the standard shakehand backhand, and at times he often gets "jammed" in fast rallies. It is also more difficult to drive the ball in a straight vector from the release point.
[edit] Forehand
Wang Hao's grip makes him more comfortable using the backhand, therefore the effectiveness of his forehand is compromised. His forehand is not considered powerful but has good accuracy and spin, used more effectively in counter driving than in self initiated attacking.
