Wanake
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Camp Wanake is a camp and retreat center in Beach City in northeast Ohio. Begun in 1946 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, it is presently owned and operated by the East Ohio Annual (Regional) Conference of the United Methodist Church. The word "Wanake" is a combination of three Delaware Native American words meaning "beautiful, spiritual place among the hills". Camp Wanake's first full time Director was the Rev. Dr. Melvin A. Moody, an Ordained Minister in the East Ohio Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church (successor of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ). Dr. Moody was a pioneer and innovator in the field of Church Camping. Wanake has been one of the premier Church Camps in America, with many Church Camping professionals nationwide having been influenced, and even directly trained, by Mel Moody.
