Waltham Model 1857
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Waltham Model 1857 is a 19th century watch movement. Although not produced in 1857, the watch known as the model (calibre) 1857, was the first truly successful machine made watch design.
Arguably, all the favorable fortune that Waltham, established since 1854 in Waltham, Massachusetts, subsequently enjoyed was based on the early commercial success of their "Model 1857" watch, inherited from their defunct predecessor, founded in 1850, see (Waltham Watch Company).
The Waltham Model 1857 established a secure market niche for American watchmaking.
