Walter Hines Page High School is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is a part of the Guilford County Schools System. The school, opened in 1958, takes its name from Walter Hines Page, a North Carolina journalist and former ambassador to Britain. The school shares a long time rivalry with Grimsley High School.

[edit] History of the Rivalry

The traditional rivalry between Page High School and Grimsley High School has existed almost since Page opened in 1958. Throughout this course of time, numerous acts of vandalism have been committed on both campuses. They range from the harmless to the extremely bizarre. During the infamous 'Spirit Week' that ends with the annual Page-Grimsley football game on Friday, the following notable instances occurred:

'"The Red Rat"' : On one very odd occasion, Page High School students released rats painted red into the halls of Grimsley, after the building had closed. The next morning resulted in pandemonium throughout the school, but the rodents were finally captured.

'"The Red Tide"' : With large numbers of Kool-Aid packets, Page students also successfully managed to turn the Grimsley swimming pool "red" (it really resulted in pink water.) But after several days, Grimsley staff were able to return the pool to its original state.

'"Sinking the Ship"' : In perhaps the greatest example of vandalism on Page property, the official Page Pirate ship was stolen and sunk in Buffalo Lake, across from Page (the ship still lies there to this day.) The ship was often attached to a truck and driven around during the Page football games.

[edit] Recent Changes

Last year, it was decided that Page High School would transfer from the popular 'Block' scheduling (in which each student took four ninety-minute courses the first semester and four different ones the next semester) to the 'Traditional' schedule (a six-period day). While it does offer more instruction time to each class (in the long run), the decision was not favored by most students. Many students felt they had little say in the argument.

Also, it was announced at the beginning of the school year that Page will offer the IB program, possibly as soon as next year. This program is one of the other options offered to Page students in addition to the AP program.

In addition, Page High principal Dr. Terry Worrell decided to leave Page in early March, 2007. She is pursuing a career as assistant superintendent in the Rockingham County School System.
