Walter Baseggio (born August 19, 1978 in Clabecq) is a Belgian football midfielder currently on the books of R.S.C. Anderlecht. He also played for the Belgian national team, though he was regularly injured for short periods of time when the national team is playing. Baseggio is born from Italian parents: his mother comes from Naples and his father from Treviso. She is an Amateur soccer player.

He made his impressive debut for Anderlecht at the age of 17 against old rival Standard Liège, and scored his first goal on that occasion. He was at the time a hot prospect for the future, but was in competition with Pär Zetterberg and Enzo Scifo, two players whose talent was already confirmed. Eventually, Baseggio became a first team regular, and then the maestro of the team after the departures of the sub-mentioned players in the late 1990s. With the come-back of Swedish Zetterberg in the summer of 2003, the coach Hugo Broos decided that there was no room for both players so Baseggio began only few games until Broos was fired in February 2005. After a deceiving end of season, he became a second choice for coach Franky Vercauteren in the 2005-06 season, and was transfer listed. However in the mid-season interval of the next season, he came back to Anderlecht as he did not receive much playing time at Treviso F.B.C. 1993 and Anderlecht was looking for an extra midfielder.
