[edit] History
It is named after the famous poet Walt Whitman, whose birthplace is within walking distance from the school. It has been graduating students since 1948. At that time, the town had grown and Huntington High School was no longer large enough. The current building that houses the school was built in 1955. A north wing was completed a few years later.
[edit] Curriculum and extra-curricular activity
Academically, the school offers studies in English, mathematics, science, social studies, health, art, music, drama, dance, physical education, business, industrial arts, and world language debate programs. Sports programs include softball, basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, fencing, badminton and more. The school has many extracurricular activities including a renowned marching band, a forensic debate team, a DECA chapter, a robotics team called the Robocats, and several other clubs. Other popular activities including homecoming week, powderpuff football, senior follies, body electric, mercy benefit, and girls sports night. The yearbook and video yearbook create nostalgic, fun, and amusing memories for students.
Athletically the Wildcats take the field and court for Walt Whitman. Former Olympic Gold Medalist Tom Gugliotta is an alumni. Girls Basketball, Field Hockey, and Softball are perennial state contenders year in and year out. In 2003 varsity softball had a 24-2 record and came second in the state. That year the varsity coach became Coach of the year and last year varsity softball was league champs! Football has never been a force at Whitman and has shown even less potential over the last few years. Also, the Chamber Orchestra, the Jazz Band, the Select Chorus, and the Marching Band constantly perform well.
A Walt Whitman High School Hall of Fame is in the planning stages as of March, 2007.
[edit] Teachers
The faculty is comprised primarily of alumni as often times those previously affiliated with the school district return in the field of education.
[edit] Academics
Academically the High School offers AP Courses, a variety of electives, and the standard New York State Regent's required curriculum.
