Walsh Jesuit High School, is a private, Jesuit high school in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Founded in 1964, the school was funded by a gift from and named after Cornelius and Jane Walsh. It is known as one of the most renowned high schools in Ohio, having been recognized twice as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, the only school in Northeast Ohio to have received this award twice. The school has an almost identical layout with another Jesuit School, St. John's Jesuit. It is also known for its sports program, having held a state championship in almost every sport, and a national championship in wrestling and soccer. The school has an intense rivalry with the other two Catholic high schools in Summit County, Archbishop Hoban High School, and St. Vincent - St. Mary High School. It is known by students in the schools as the "triangle rivalry".

[edit] Overview
The school is run by the Jesuits, an order of the Roman Catholic Church. Its educational traditions can be traced to Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. Its motto is "Men and Women for Others", taken from a 1973 address by the Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., former Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Walsh's unnofficial motto, "Make the 'W' shine," was often proclaimed by the school's previous dean. The school's colors are those of Ignatius, gold and maroon. Its sports teams are known as the Warriors.
Walsh Jesuit High School is one of 47 Jesuit high schools in the United States, organized in the Jesuit Secondary Education Association. Although originally an all male high school, Walsh Jesuit began admitting young women in 1993. The class of 1994 was the last single-gender graduating class.
Attached to the high school is a chapel dedicated to the lives and memory of the North American Jesuit Martyrs (also known as the Canadian Martyrs), eight Jesuit missionaries that worked among the native people of what is now Quebec and upper New York State in the 17th century. A special mass honoring these martyrs is held for the students on or around the 19th of October. The exterior of the chapel features a distinguishing pinnacled roof built to resemble an American Indian teepee with a cross emerging from the center, the likeness of which serves as Walsh Jesuit's school logo.
[edit] Academics
Graduation requirements require coursework in English, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign language, fine arts, physical education, and theology with additional courses in computer science available. Being an accredited college preparatory high school, Walsh Jesuit also provides an Advanced and Advanced Placement program, preparing students to take over 18 AP tests with an 81% of test scores qualifying for college credit. 100% of students continue to higher education; 99.5% of graduates attend four-year institutions throughout the United States. More than 80 percent of the class of 2006 received merit scholarships totaling $15 million. Since 2000, the National Merit Corporation has recognized 63 Walsh Jesuit students. The outstanding academic program of Walsh Jesuit can largely be associated with the incredible staff. Nearly 80% of Walsh's faculty members hold at least a master's degree. The average teaching experience for a Walsh Jesuit teacher is 17 years. There are 80 members of the professional staff, including five Jesuit priests.
[edit] Graduate at Graduation
The Graduate at Gradation, which is known to most as the "Grad at Grad," is a statement that outlines the goals of a Walsh education. It emphasizes academic growth as well as spiritual and leadership growth. It includes five overall attributes of the perfect graduate:
- Open to Growth
- Intellectually Competent
- Religious
- Loving
- Committed to Doing Justice
[edit] Capital Campaign
Walsh Jesuit High School officially launched a $10 million capital campaign on Saturday, September 24, 2006. The campaign — For the Greater Glory of God — will raise nearly $2 million toward the educational endowment and more than $8 million toward construction and renovation of the school and chapel. Some improvements include:
- Add $1.7 million to the current endowment, meaning an additional $85,000 in financial aid would be available each year
- Allocate $8.3 million toward physical changes, including the:
- construction of a new entry and two administrative wings, complete with a statue of St. Ignatius, skylights, and display cases;
- construction of a new fine arts center, featuring expanded backstage areas, new dressing rooms, and centralized facilities for the school’s choirs and bands, all anchored by a renovated theater;
- construction of a new fitness center on the mezzanine level of the Ricco Fieldhouse that would be open to all students, faculty, and staff;
- renovation of the school’s commons, with updates to the kitchen, restrooms, and bookstore; and
- renovation and expansion of the chapel to accommodate the entire student body, while maintaining the chapel’s beauty and integrity.
