Wallingford Center, Connecticut

Wallingford Center is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 17,509 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.9 km² (7.3 mi²). 18.5 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.65%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 17,509 people, 7,331 households, and 4,493 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 944.2/km² (2,444.6/mi²). There were 7,720 housing units at an average density of 416.3/km² (1,077.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.64% White, 1.19% African American, 0.23% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 2.18% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.01% of the population.

There were 7,331 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,827, and the median income for a family was $56,328. Males had a median income of $39,841 versus $30,821 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,724. About 3.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
