Wallace Collection
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wallace Collection is a national art museum located in London. It was established from the private collection of Sir Richard Wallace, which was bequeathed to the UK by his widow in 1897. The museum opened to the public in 1900, in Hertford House in Manchester Square. The collection includes old master paintings including The Laughing Cavalier), fine porcelain such as Sèvres and Meissen, armour, 18th century French furniture and diverse objets d'art. One of the oldest items dates back to the 14th century. The collection contains numerous Rembrants including a self portrait.
There is also a picture of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester in the same room as a portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots. Ironically at one point Queen Elizabeth I had planned that they should become engaged.
A few years ago the inner courtyard was given a glass roof and now contains a restaurant. Admission is free.
