Walhachin, British Columbia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walhachin is a small town in central British Columbia, Canada, near Kamloops Lake. The population is about 100 and the postal code is V0K 2P0.

The place was first named "Penney's", after the original settler, Charles Penny. In 1908, Charles Barnes, an American entrepreneur, had it renamed "Walhachin" (which means "Land of the Round Rock" in the Nlaka'pamux (Thompson) language), and encouraged settlement into a pre-fabricated community that he created. By 1914, there were 300 residents, but World War I required many of the British residents to leave, and Walhachin later collapsed.
