Wakasa Province

Wakasa (若狭国; -no kuni) in Japan was an old province in the area that is today southern Fukui prefecture. Another name is Reinan (嶺南).
The province's ancient capital was at Obama, which continued to be the main castle town through the Edo period.

Wakasa bordered on Echizen, Omi, Tamba, Tango, and Yamashiro provinces.

Before Ritsuryo period, Wakasa Province was a realm of Yamato Dynasty.
During Ritsuryo period, many shrines and temple were established. Wakasa Province offered fish to Yamato Dynasty, and called "the land of foods".
From Ritsuryo period to Edo period, Wakasa Province has harbors which lands fish (especially Mackerel), fish was transported to Nara or Kyoto. In Edo period, Tsuruga was a base of Kitamaebune.

Wakasa Area has has 5 nuclear power plants, and called "downtown of nuclear power plants".

Many temples in Wakasa Area were bases of Yamato Dynasty, such as Wakasahime Shirine (Obama) and Kehi Shirine (Tsuruga). Especially, Obama is called "Nara by the sea".
