Wainscott is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York on the South Shore of Long Island. As of the United States 2000 Census, the CDP population was 628.

Wainscott is in the southwest corner of the town of East Hampton. Wainscott is home to the only public one-room school house operating in New York State. The hamlet was named after a village north of Maidstone, England, an area immortalized in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.

Wainscott is located at 40°57′9″N, 72°14′43″W (40.952395, -72.245215)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.9 km² (7.3 mi²). 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (6.85%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 628 people, 260 households, and 152 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 35.7/km² (92.3/mi²). There were 764 housing units at an average density of 43.4/km² (112.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.45% White, 4.14% African American, 0.32% Asian, 1.91% from other races, and 3.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.01% of the population.

There were 260 households out of which 22.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 18.6% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $55,714, and the median income for a family was $52,250. Males had a median income of $46,250 versus $41,458 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $34,058. About 2.0% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 5.5% of those age 65 or over.
