Waima is under the local governance of the Waitakere City Council.
According to the 2006 census, Waima has a population of 2367. (From 2316 in 2001)
The majority of this modest population is clustered around the comparatively prominent Waima superette, situated just off of the main arterial road Woodlands Park Road, on such steets as Waima Cresent, Hollywood Avenue, Boylan Road and Rimutaka Place. The central “hub” could be considered Waima reserve, which consists of various public amenities such as a playground, basketball court, toilets and sports field.
To the North West, Waima is bordered by popular walking track and Lower Nihotipu Reservoir pipeline route “Exhibition Drive”. Two water treatment stations and holding tanks service Auckland city’s water supply from locations on Woodlands Park Road. Waima extends East to Tainui Road and the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park and the cul de sac of Rimutaka place represents Waima’s Southern most point.
Most young residents attend nearby Woodlands Park or Titirangi Primary Schools, Glen Eden Intermediate school and Green Bay High School. (Although a recent trend has seen New Zealand secondary school students attend other than their local high school.)
The immediate area has been informally dubbed “T-town” by resident youths. The ‘T’ relating to both the luscious trees that enclose the locality and also the nearby suburb Titirangi of which Waima is associated by postal code.
