Waikato Mounted Rifles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles is an armoured regiment of the New Zealand Army, part of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps. The unit is a single squadron within the Territorial Force that serves in the armoured reconnaissance role.
The squadron was originally known as the Waikato/Wellington East Coast Squadron, forming C Squadron of the Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles. With the reorganisation of the army that occurred in 1999, C Squadron was moved to the Hauraki Regiment; this caused the connection with the Wellington East Coast to be severed, with the squadron renamed as the Waikato Mounted Rifles.
The original regiment the squadron is descended from was the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, first formed in 1911. Following the Second World War the regiment was absorbed by the newly formed TF 1st Armoured Regiment and then finally reduced to the Waikato/Wellington East Coast Squadron.
