Waelder is a city in Gonzales County, Texas, United States. The population was 947 at the 2000 census.

Waelder is located at 29°41′37″N, 97°17′54″W (29.693658, -97.298288)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.78% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 947 people, 334 households, and 224 families residing in the city. The population density was 285.7/km² (740.4/mi²). There were 413 housing units at an average density of 124.6/km² (322.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 50.16% White, 24.50% African American, 0.11% Native American, 23.55% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 60.51% of the population.

There were 334 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% were married couples living together, 17.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.50.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 106.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $22,381, and t•he median income for a family was $26,625. Males had a median income of $17,244 versus $12,679 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,181. About 25.8% of families and 27.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.5% of those under age 18 and 23.6% of those age 65 or over.
