Vyjayanthimala Bali is an Indian actress. She was born August 13, 1936 in Chennai and trained in Bharatnatyam, a South Indian classical dance. At the age of 15, she got a break in an AVM (production house) Tamil film, Vazhkai made by M V Raman, a family friend. The film was a hit and was remade in Hindi as Bahaar (1951). She acted in some tamil movies initially. Her dance competition with Padmini in a tamil film Vanjikottai Vaaliban was a very famous one.

[edit] Career in Hindi films
Though of Tamil origin, Vyjanthimala was also fluent in Hindi. Initially, after her success in Tamil films, she got roles in Hindi films like Ladki and Nagin (1954). The music by Hemant Kumar and her dance to the "Tan Dole Mera Man dole" song in Nagin made the movie a huge hit and helped her break out of B grade movies . Bimal Roy noticed her and cast her as Chandramukhi opposite Dilip Kumar in the critically acclaimed Devdas. She also made it to Bimal Roy's most commercially successful film Madhumati again with Dilip Kumar, with whom she also had several other successful films such as Ganga Jamuna and Leader. She also worked with Raj Kapoor in Sangam, and there were rumours of an affair with Raj Kapoor during this film (causing a stir as she was believed to be from the Dilip Kumar camp). She also worked with Dev Anand in Jewel Thief and with Kishore Kumar in his inane and zany comedies.

Afer getting married with Raj Kapoor's personal physician Dr Bali, she took a mutual decision that she would quit films. She moved to Chennai and brought up her son Suchindra. She joined politics later and won an election to become a Lok Sabha (lower house) M.P (Member of Parliament). She later got nominated to the upper house as an M.P.

She worked with Dilip Kumar in 6 films. By the last film ( Sungharsh in 1968) the two had a falling out and were not on talking terms.

- 1956 - Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, Devdas. She refused to accept it, saying that she was not a supporting actress, but a heroine, so she should get the award for Best Actress.[1]
