Vyacheslav 'Slava' Kozlov (Вячеслав Козлов, born May 3, 1972 in Voskresensk, Soviet Union) is a Russian ice hockey left winger who currently plays for the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL.

Kozlov was drafted 45th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He became a regular player with Detroit in the 1993-94 NHL season. After the Red Wings acquired Igor Larionov in 1995, coach Scotty Bowman created a 5-man Russian unit (the "Russian Five") consisting of forwards Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov and Larionov, and defensemen Vladimir Konstantinov and Viacheslav Fetisov. This group helped Detroit to a Stanley Cup win in 1997, but during that summer Konstantinov and Fetisov were involved in a limo crash that put Konstantinov in a coma and ended his career. The Red Wings won another Cup in 1998.

Kozlov played for Detroit until the summer of 2001, when he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in the trade that put Dominik Hašek in a Red Wings jersey. After one injury-shortened season in Buffalo, Kozlov was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers.

[edit] Tragic Car Accident in Russia

While Kozlov was playing for HC CSKA Moscow, he and teammate Karil Tarasov were involved in a fatal car accident. While trying to maneuver through the streets of Moscow in order to get to the team's practice facility, Kozlov's car struck a bus. Tarasov died from his injuries; Kozlov suffered severe injuries, and was brought to the United States by the Red Wings organization to receive medical care and rehabilitation. Excessive speed was blamed for the accident.

Kozlov has also had to play on two teams that have lost players to car crashes; the aforementioned 1997-98 Red Wings (which was non-fatal), and the 2003-04 Thrashers, following the crash that killed Dan Snyder and injured Dany Heatley. Similar to Kozlov, Heatley had been driving at excessive speed when he lost control of his car.
