Since its founding around the year 1377 it was one of the most important villages in the Burzenland area, were there was a strong Transylvanian Saxon community.

According to 2002 census, the commune had a population of about 5,200 inhabitants, by then containing three villages:

  • The main village of Vulcan.
  • Holbav.
  • Colonia 1 Mai.

By 12 February 2004, the Holbav village became itself a separate commune.
