[edit] Plot summary
The film begins with an introduction by the main character, Ivan, who begins speaking. While he is speaking, The movie then cuts to a scene in a Chechen Rebel camp. Two bedraggled, unkempt men are seen sawing wood. A truck drives into the camp and several men, mostly Russian soldiers are thrown out of the truck and beaten around by the Chechens. Two of the soldiers are then killed by the rebel leader, Aslan, and the rest of the Chechens then begin to fire their weapons into the air. A man and a woman in civilian clothes are herded from the truck. The man begins shouting in English. The film then cuts to a scene in a darkened room. Three soldiers and three civilians are held in the hole. The three soldiers are Ivan, Fedka and Captain Medvedev. The three civilians are John, Margaret and a jewish man called Semyon. As the people begin talking, the Chechens come into the room and hold down Semyon then cut his fingers off. Later on in the film, Aslan has negotiated for the release of some Chechen prisoners in return for the release of the soldiers he has held. He also agrees to release John on the condition that he return with four million pounds. Aslan says that if he doesnt return in 4 weeks with this money Margaret will be raped and murdered. Ivan returns to his home city of Tobolsk in Siberia and John returns to London and tries (unsuccessfully) to raise the ransom money. After visiting the Russian Interior Ministry and the British Embassy in Moscow he realises the government is unwilling to help him. He is offered £200,000 by a representative of Channel 4 in return for exclusive footage of the handover. John heads to Russia and manages to track down Ivan in Tobolsk. At first Ivan is reluctant to go back to Chechnya but John lures him with the promise of hard cash. First the pair travel by train to Vladikavkaz and visit an army surplus store to get some supplies. Ivan also has with him a double barrelled shotgun and in one scene we see the pair being stopped and searched by the militsiya while Ivans gun licence is inspected. Next the pair try to find a way to cross the border into Chechnya. Ivan takes John to a local army base and gets talking to a young soldier. After finding out that the truck the soldier is due to travel in is heading into Chechnya Ivan asks the soldier if he can ride in the truck. They manage to get a ride after the soldier swaps boots with Ivan. (Ivan is wearing privately purchased combat boots, whereas the soldier is wearing the standard Russian army jackboots). The pair cross the border into Chechnya and are hidden from view under a tarpaulin and some RPG-7 rockets. After getting out of the truck, they begin making their way on foot. On the way to the camp, the pair come across a Chechen shepherd named Ruslan who helps them find their way to the camp, and even helps them fight against the other Chechens. The pair rescue Margaret and Captain Medvedev, and in a rage John guns down Aslan with a pistol. John, Ivan, Ruslan, Margaret and the captain all escape along the river and have to shoot their way out. Eventually they make it to safety At the end of the film we see Ivan sitting in a prison cell talking about how he is being charged with killing citizens of the Russian Federation. He tells us what has happened to the others and says he doesnt think he will be locked up. The film then ends....
