Votes at 16

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Votes at 16 campaign is a movement organised in the United Kingdom which argues in favour of the reduction of the voting age to 16 for all public elections. The chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown has expressed his support for the cause, and has committed himself to lowering the voting age to 16. The voting age on the Isle of Man has been lowered to 16.

Votes at 16 has vast support from an umbrella organisation called the Votes at 16 coalition, and for more information see the second external link below.

The reason why many people argue that 16 year olds should be able to vote is because they pay tax. If you are paying tax you should be able to chose how they are going to spend it and who does. Other arguments include, joining the armed forces, having a baby, being able to drink in a restrauant, and increasingly the amount of volunteer work young people do.

Many young people help the community and due to the negative media attention they are used to be seen as ASBOs, and for a lot of the 16 years old this isn't true.
