Voronkovo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Voronkovo (location: 47°41'N 029°06'E) is a village in the Administrative Region of Rybnitsa in Transnistria. It is also the site of the Church of the Blessed Virgin's Assumption, a Russian Orthodox church featured on gold and silver coins issued in the series of Orthodox Temples (Transnistria) by Transnistria's Central Bank. For the religious community of Transnistria, this church in Voronkovo has a very special significance: It is the only church in Transnistria which was never once closed, not even during Soviet times when all other churches had to close. The construction of the church was completed in the year 1800 and it is still open and functioning today, standing much as it did when it first opened its doors.

Voronkovo also used to be home to a now-abandoned military airfield of the former Soviet Union. The airfield's 2500 meter long runway has today been turned into farmland.[1]
