Volme

The Volme is a river in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, left tributary of the Ruhr. It is 49,8 km long, of which 21,3 km within the city limits of Hagen.

It begins at 480 m above sea level at the southeastern part of the Ruhr area and flows through the municipalities of Meinerzhagen and Hagen and ends at 91 m above sea level emptying into the Ruhr. In the city of Hagen, the Volme is predominantly canalized, and is being renovated since 2004.

In the pre-industrial age, numerous mills, smiths, and foundries arose along the Volme, from which the iron industry developed during the 19th and the 20th centuries.
