Volcano Number

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volcano Number (also: Volcano Reference File Number, Volcano Numbering System, or VNUM) is a hierarchical geographical systematic system to uniquely identify and tag volcanoes and volcanic features on Earth.

The VNUM was developed by the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World Project by IAVCEI in the late 1930s and is currently administered by the Global Volcanism Program at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington (USA), under a mandate of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI, a sub-entity of IUGG), and in partnership with the World Organization of Volcano Observatories (WOVO, a comission of IAVCEI).

For an explanation of the system, see here.
