Vladimir Marchenko

Vladimir Marchenko (born 7 July 1922) is an outstanding Ukrainian mathematician who specialized in mathematical physics, in particular in the analysis of the Sturm-Liouville and Schrödinger equations. Together with Leonid Pastur, Vladimir Marchenko discovered the Marchenko - Pastur law in random matrix theory.

He has authored over 100 scientific articles, including 7 monographs. He defended his PhD thesis in 1951 and became professor at Kharkov State University in 1952. In 1961 he joined the newly created Institute for Low Temperature, Physics and Engineering, where he took an active part in the organization of Mathematical Division.
