Vladimir Malakhov (Russian: Владимир Малахов, Vladimir Malachov; born August 30, 1968 in Yekaterinburg, Russia) is a retired professional ice hockey player. He is currently under contract with the San Jose Sharks in the NHL. He has also played in the Russian Super League.

Malakhov was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1989 NHL Entry draft, tenth round, 101st overall. He has played for Spartak Moscow, CSKA Moscow, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils (winning the Stanley Cup in 2000), New York Rangers, and the Philadelphia Flyers.

[edit] Controversy

On 19 December 2005, reports surfaced that Vladimir, who joined the Devils for the second time, had unexpectedly retired from the NHL. However, shortly after the story broke, his agent claimed that Malakhov has not retired and is taking a leave of absence "to deal with some internal, personal and medical issues." This claim has been disputed by Lou Lamoriello, Devils CEO, president, general manager, and interim head coach. Lamoriello has rejected the request for a leave of absence and is treating Malakhov's absence as a retirement. Although the team has already taken steps to replace Malakhov (the Devils welcome this surprise move due to salary cap problems), it is doubtful that this situation will go away without a battle.

This is not Malakhov's first run in with his team. In 2000, while playing for the Montreal Canadiens, Malakhov was suspended for going skiing while he was out of the lineup with knee injury.
