Grigolo was born in Rome, but raised in Arezzo. He began singing by the age of 4. At 9, he was chosen to become part of Sistine Chapel Choir as a soloist. He then studied for five years at the Scuola Puerorum at the Sistine Chapel. At 12, Grigolo sang Tosca with Luciano Pavarotti at the Rome Opera House, becoming known as 'Il Pavarottino'. At 18 he joined the Vienna Opera Company. He became the youngest Italian tenor to sing at Milan's La Scala at age 23.
