Vito Cruz LRT Station is a station on the Manila LRT Yellow Line (LRT-1). Like all other LRT-1 stations, Vito Cruz station is above-ground. The station serves Malate in Manila and is the first station from Baclaran and the last station from Monumento to lie within Manila city bounds. The station is named after Vito Cruz Street, where the station is located.

The station is the fifth station for trains headed to Monumento and the fourteenth station for trains headed to Baclaran. The station is near some major landmarks, such as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas complex, the Harrison Plaza and University Mall shopping centers and the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, where some of the sports in previous Southeast Asian Games were played.

The station is also close to some educational institutions, such as the main campus of Arellano University, De La Salle University-Manila, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and St. Scholastica's College. The station is also near Manila's main pelota court, where all of the city's jai-alai games are played.

[edit] Transportation links

Buses serving the Taft Avenue route, taxis, jeepneys and cycle rickshaws stop in and around the station. Some destinations, such as St. Scholastica's College, are within walking distance from the station. There is also a Philippine National Railways station of the same name, although the station is far from the station, requiring a commute from the station.

[edit] Suicide at the station

In late May 2005, a fisherman jumped off a moving LRT train headed northbound and landed on the tracks. After that incident, he was then subsequently hit by a southbound LRT train, with the man being dragged under the train until the train stopped at the station at about 3:00 PM. LRTA employees then took him to Philippine General Hospital, where he suffered from massive head injuries and eventually died at 8:00 PM. Police say it was an apparent suicide after his wife left him for another man.
