Vision insurance is a form of insurance that provides coverage for the services rendered by eye care professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists. There a many vision insurance companies. Vision Service Plan (VSP) is a doctor-owned company based in Rancho Cordova, California. Their network includes majority of the private practice eye doctors with flexible plans. Spectera, a UnitedHealthcare company, contracts with national retailers such as Costco and Wal-Mart in addition to private practice eye doctors to create a more flexible network with more options. Superior, also based in California, contracts with Lenscrafters and JCPenneys and is expanding it's operations. Other companies like Davis and Cole Vision are large regional companies that focus their network and growth opportunities in certain regions of the U.S. The typical vision insurance plan provides yearly coverage for eye examinations and partial or full coverage eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses, with or without copays, depending on the plan chosen.
