Matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nested dolls or Babushka dolls, were seen as early as 1890. They are not a traditional Russian handicraft, although the concept of nested objects was familiar in Russia. The first set of dolls is said to have been made by a painter in the Abramtsevo estate inspired by a set of Japanese wooden dolls representing the Seven Gods of Fortune.

Selecting an image

There is no formal nomination process for adding a new image to the selected images collection. Before adding an image, keep the following in mind:

  1. Images must be free, either public domain or freely licensed. Fair use images are not permitted outside of the article namespace (see Fair use policy criteria #9).
  2. Images should be of high quality.
  3. Images should be a useful means to point to Wikipedia content. Do not add an image that is not in use somewhere within a Wikipedia entry. To determine this, check the bottom of the image page itself, where you will find a list of File Links.

Suggest an image

Feel free to leave any suggestions for a selected image in this section. Comments are helpful.
