Virtual Valley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Virtual Valley was a public (non-profit?) Internet Service Provider/ web publishing venture initated by San Jose Metro with grants from Pacific Bell and others. Operations commenced in 1994. The aim of the project was to provide web sites at low or no cost to municipal governments and non-profits. Office space was donated by the Metro's publisher Dan Pulcano. Pacific Bell provided the dialup lines. It is unclear who provided the modems and servers.

The importance of this venture cannot be underestimated. At a time when it was exceedingly difficult for a small or medium organization to set up a web presence, find an ISP, incur the recurring charges of a new service, etc. in rapidly evolving cyberspace, VV was an ambitious attempt to level the playing field for the non-profit and governmental sectors.
