Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau (1859- 1915) was a Paris socialite.
Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau was born in Louisiana of a French Creole family which moved to France when she was 8 years old.
One of Paris' notorious beauties, Gautreau wore lavender powder and prided herself on her appearance.
She posed for paintings by several noted 19th century painters, most famously for John Singer Sargent's " Portrait of Madame X" and for Antonio de La Gandara.
