State Route 83 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia, running from U.S. Route 23 Business in Pound east to West Virginia Route 83. The whole SR 83 corridor is planned to be replaced by the Coalfields Expressway (U.S. Route 121).

[edit] Description

Wise County

SR 83 begins in downtown Pound at U.S. Route 23 Business. It heads in a general easterly direction along small creeks and over a summit, passing Meade.

Dickenson County

Just after crossing the county line, SR 83 crosses through Georges Fork Gap, intersects State Route 361 (the access road to Red Onion State Prison), and then heads east along the Georges Fork past Baden to the community of Georges Fork, where State Route 72 ends at SR 83. The Georges Fork turns north there, but SR 83 continues east over a small summit into Clintwood. It leaves the town to the southeast, crossing another summit into the Long Branch valley, which it follows east to the Cranes Neck River. Then it runs southeast and east alongside Camp Creek and over Caney Ridge at Bearpen Gap to Fremont on the McClure River. State Route 63 overlaps SR 83 from Fremont northerly along the McClure River to Clinchco. There SR 63 splits onto an old alignment of SR 83, but SR 83 continues east-northeasterly alongside the river via Steinman to Haysi. In Haysi it joins State Route 80 and meets the north end of SR 63, and then runs east along Russell Prater Creek past a split with SR 80 and into Buchanan County.

Buchanan County

SR 83 continues alongside Russell Prater Creek past Vicey, then splitting to follow the War Fork past Prater. It crosses a ridge at Lovers Gap and then follows the Big Lick Branch and Big Prater Creek to a bridge over the Levisa Fork and junction with U.S. Route 460 at Vansant. SR 83 overlaps US 460 northwards along the Levisa Fork past Tookland and Royal City to Grundy, where it splits to the east along Slate Creek. Slate Creek takes SR 83 past Longbottom, Stacy, Matney and Slate; it splits along the Nighway Branch and climbs onto the State Line Ridge. SR 83 runs along the West Virginia state line to Paynesville, where it becomes West Virginia Route 83. WV 83 continues along the state line to Jackson Flats, where it curves away towards Bradshaw, West Virginia.
