Virsat is a Hindi musical drama film released in India in 1997.
It starred Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Amrish Puri, Pooja Batra, Milind Gunaji and Govind Namdeo. It is a remake of a Tamil film Thevar Magan starring Kamal Hassan, Revathi and Gauthami.
Virasat was directed by Priyadarshan, story was by Kamal Hassan and Anu Malik was the music composer.

When the orthodox village chief Raja Thakur's(Amrish Puri) son Shakti(Anil Kapoor) comes back after studying abroad, he comes with extra baggage -an ambition to start a chain of restaurants in the city, and a live-in girlfriend(Pooja Batra). Raja Thakur who wants his son to live in the village and develop the living conditions there, is devastated.
But soon, Shakti gets embroiled in the local politics and his father dies of a heart attack. Shakti gives up his ambitions and his love and takes up the responsibilities left by his father as legacy(Virasat). He also weds a village belle(Tabu), whom he learns to love deeply and passionately.
Trivia : The film received almost no attention before its release. Even when it opened in cinemas, the halls were empty even though the critics were floored. But soon, word-of-mouth publicity attracted the crowds and the film became a hit.
Studded with astounding performances by Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Amrish Puri and Pooja Batra, this film is a cult classic.
It received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film, Best Actor(Anil Kapoor)and Best Actress(Tabu).
