[edit] Summary
This is a traditional virge as used by vergers. There are many styles of virges. Most of them resemble a club, mace, or spear because these were sometimes used long ago as weapons.
Note that this virge has a brass ball with a small cross on the top. It is common, but not required, for a virge to have a religious symbol on it.
A verger carries the virge during a religious procession. It is often carried at a 45-degree angle, away from the body, with the lower end close to the waist (hip) of the verger and the top forward in front of the verger (see photo). It can also be carried with the right hand on the low end held close to the body and the top resting on the right shoulder of the verger. When a verger is not processing, the virge can be held with the low end in the right hand and the upper end resting in the crook of the left arm.
