[edit] Life and work
Viona Ielegems comes from Antwerp. The Brabantine Gothic architecture of her homeland influenced her in her love for Romanticism already in early life. In 2003 she completed a degree in photography at the Karel de Grote Hogeschool in Antwerp. Since then she has worked as a professional photographer and teaches digital photography at the university in Mechelen[1].
Her art work became well-known by her mystical motifs, in particular by her portraits according to Victorian fashion and the style of Classicism. Hence her photographs enjoy great popularity in magazines and publications of the goth subculture, especially in Latin America and Europe.[2]. The use of high-contrast colour works is however rather atypical for the goth scene and addresses her images to a larger circle of beholders. Viona put exhibitions of her images in Antwerp, Cologne, Luxembourg and in Beijing.
In contrast to modern photography Ielegems deviates from strict realism in art. Retro and unrealistic components characterise her photographs, which are conceived as guides out of the drab monotony of everyday life. This often takes the form of the high priestess of the woods. Pagan characters and ancient gods are a great source of inspiration for her art.
