Vinson & Elkins (or V&E) is an international law firm with offices in Houston (headquarters), Dallas, Austin, Beijing, Shanghai, London, Tokyo, New York City, Washington, D.C., Moscow, Dubai, and Hong Kong. With annual revenues of over 500 million dollars and 700 attorneys, it is one of the largest and most successful law firms in the United States. It consistently ranks as one of the most profitable law firms based on per partner dividends and per attorney revenue and is an industry leader in setting associate compensation and benefits.
The firm was started in Houston, Texas in 1917 by James A. Elkins and William A. Vinson and considered by many to be the leading law firm based in the southwestern United States.[1] The firm is especially known for its energy industry expertise. However, in recent years, it has also been recognized as a leader in many other practices including public finance, infrastructure development, international transactions, media law, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, intellectual property, class action defense, healthcare, regulatory matters, professional liability, and complex commercial litigation. Known for its traditionally friendly work atmosphere and excellent employee benefits, Vinson & Elkins was voted one of the best places to work in Texas in 2006. Outside of the law, Vinson & Elkins has also been recognized for its community involvement and support for the arts.
Among others, Vinson & Elkins represented the failed energy company Enron prior to the company's collapse in 2001. This led to a number of lawsuits against Vinson & Elkins and others by former Enron employees and shareholders. After nearly five years of legal battles, Vinson & Elkins was dismissed from the last significant litigation related to the Enron collapse in January 2007.
Currently, the firm represents former Congressman Bob Ney in connection with the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.
