From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1906 Moses Rittenhouse donated a farm of 90 acres at Vineland to the province of Ontario for the purpose of experimenting with tender fruits. Nestled on the south shore of Lake Ontario the Vineland Experimental Station is a cooperative between the province of Ontario's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, The University of Guelph and the University of Toronto.
Current research includes horticultural fruit production, viticulture and greenhouse floriculture. The campus also boast the Millennium Forest, and the heritage gardens, witch are open to the public. The microclimate of this site has made it possible to grow impressive specimens of tender woody plant species including Ailanthus, Ilex and Pterocarya.
Vineland has been instrumental in the development and growth of the Ontario Wine Industry. It has also developed over 77 varieties of commercial fruit crops and over 42 varieties of horticultural ornamentals including several varieties of lilies and azaleas.
