Vincent Ignizio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vincent Ignizio is a Republican member of the New York City Council. He was a New York State Assemblyman before being elected to the City Council. He represented the 62nd Assembly District, which is comprised of neighborhoods found on the South Shore of Staten Island. After the November 2006 election, he became the only Republican member of the New York State Assembly from New York City.

Elected in 2004, Ignizio served as the Ranking Minority Member on the Social Services Committee, and a member of the Children and Families, Corporations, Authorities and Commissions Committees.

Prior to his election to the Assembly, Ignizio served as the Chief of Staff to former Staten Island City Councilman Stephen J. Fiala, and then as the Chief of Staff of City Councilman Andrew J. Lanza.

In 2004, he launched a successful campaign to unseat Robert Straniere, who had held this seat since 1981. Even though he had not earned the support of the Conservative Party of New York State, which usually cross-endorses Republican nominees, he won the general election, defeating both Straniere, who was running on a third party line, the Conservative endorsee, and his main Democratic Party opponent.

In January 2007, he announced his candidacy in a special election for New York City Council member for the 51st City Council District. The special election is being held to fill the Council vacancy of Andrew Lanza, who resigned his seat when he was elected to the New York State Senate in November 2006.

On February 20, 2007, Ignizio was elected with 72 percent of the vote against Democrat Emmanuele Innamorato.

Ignizio holds a B.A. in Communications and Journalism from Rider University.
