Village Shopping Centre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Village Shopping Centre (commonly referred to as The Village) is a shopping centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and is the city's second largest mall (after the Avalon Mall). It offers about 100 stores and services, a food court, and formerly contained a central water fountain area.
Its anchor tenant is currently Sears, the upper level of which is currently operated as a Sears Home store. Despite the recent opening of a new Sears at the Avalon Mall, the chain is reportedly bound by a long-term lease at the Village as well.
During the early 1990s, its 2nd major tenant, Woolco (sales as low as $88-sq. ft.) , was underperforming and mall management embarked on an upscale renovation program to boost sales at Woolco.
Wal-Mart previously occupied the opposite side of the shopping centre, but was closed down. Since then, the area has since been used for television and movie sets, by the retail outlet Office Furniture Warehouse owned by East Coast Liquidation, and most recently by Dollarama and a Convergys call centre (top floor; bottom floor under renovation). The mall's third-largest tenant, Winners, recently relocated to the Avalon Mall.
The Village Shopping Centre is located at 430 Topsail Road, near Columbus Drive. The mall is currently jointly owned by Plazacorp Retail Properties and Kimco Realty.
