Vilanculos
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vilanculos is a town in the Inhambane province of Mozambique. It is a possible stop-over for both tourists headed to the Bazaruto Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, as well as for those traveling between Maputo and Beira. Vilanculos has been growing extensively over the last decade, and has been the recipient of considerable inward investment into its tourism infrastructure. It has become an increasingly popular destination 'off the beaten track' for South African holidaymakers and others, offering a combination of good weather almost all year around, crystal blue seas, long white sandy beaches and many water sports, without being massively over-developed. Prices are respectable even in USD terms, but not yet a rip-off. Several resorts have been developed in recent years, and there are now a number of good restaurants available. Advisable to travel there with USD in cash, if you're planning a visit, as electronic banking is yet to really take off. A success story in the ongoing economic rehabilitation of Mozambique.
It is home to an "international" airport, which serves daily flights to several regional destinations, in particular Johannesburg, South Africa, but also to Maputo, Swaziland, Durban and elsewhere.
