[edit] AfD Nomination: Boxx

An editor has nominated the article Boxx for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Boxx. Add four tildes like this ˜˜˜˜ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Boxx during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate. [edit] Reply to email

Vildan - in reply to your email, I will try to explain the "rules" here. Articles must be about notable subjects, and must have reliable sources. The two links there give a much more formal description of what those criteria mean; also look at WP:SOFTWARE, which discusses notability criteria for software. For the article on Boxx, the short version is that there must be multiple sources, independent of the creators of Boxx, which discuss Boxx. Argyriou (talk) 19:45, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Ok, but what if those sources are in printed material and not the Internet? There's a lot of material that is not published on the internet.
Do the sources must be on the Wikipedia?
If I understand correctly, there must be a critical mass on Wikipedia for an certain article or anything to be published, correct? You are saying "there must be multiple sources, independent of the creators of Boxx..".
Question: If somebody writes an article about a person, and in that article refers to e.g. Boxx, is that what you are saying is necessary?
But what should come first, an referece or an article?
Read WP:CITE for lots and lots of information on why and how to cite sources. Citations don't need to be to Wikipedia articles, or even to on-line information. Books and journals and periodicals are acceptable. Lately, Wikipedians have been preferring the footnote system, described at the link. There are Citation templates for certain kinds of citations, where you fill in the information you have, and it automatically generates a citation in the correct form.
I assume you and your co-author wrote a paper (or thesis) about the Boxx language. Has anyone else written about it? Does anyone outside you and your coauthor use the language regularly? Do people download it and install it on their computers? Have any of them written about it? Those are the sorts of things which are looked for when judging the notability of an article. An article about you (or your co-author), which mentions Boxx in passing, is not enough - that article may demonstrate that you are notable enough for an article on Wikipedia, but not that Boxx is.
The Boxx article has been listed as an article for deletion, here. The AfD process is a discussion, not a vote; after the AfD has been up a while, someone will come through and decide whether there is a consensus to delete or keep the article, based on the arguments either way (it's not a vote, 20 people with the same argument count less than 2 people with two different legitimate arguments), and acts accordingly. If there is no consensus, the article is kept.
Two other notes:
  1. The graphic Image:Boxx.png has been tagged because there is no copyright information. If you created the image, you are the copyright holder, and you may license it to Wikipedia under the GFDL or certain Creative Commons licenses. To do so, look at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and select an appropriate licensing, and add the tag at the image page. If you do own the copyright, and/or can obtain permission to use it, it's appropriate to keep the image on the article's page.
  2. I much prefer to have conversations regarding Wikipedia on Wikipedia talk pages; I'd prefer if you replied here (or secondarily at my talk page), rather than by email.
