Vikram (name)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vikram is a male name in the Hindu community. Vikram means the one who is wise, brave and strong. The name originally is derived from one of the qualities attributed to Vishnu, the Preserver, one of the main Trinity of Hindu devas. This is one of the first few names in the Vishnu Sahasranama - a tributary series of lyrics that sing the praise of Vishnu and ascribe a thousand names (Sahasranam) to him - each describing a quality of his perceived magnificence.

The name Vikram does NOT originate from the king Vikramaditya who ruled India for 39 years (375414 AD). Vikramaditya literally means Strength [of the] Sun. Aditya means son of Aditi, the most famous of whom was the deva representing the Sun. Vikramaditya is more a title for a king, many of whom have been given this appellation - one of the more famous ones being Chandragupta II of the Gupta Empire.
