Vijitapura The original Vijithapura is the Current city of Jafna in the northern part of the country,[citation needed] back then this city had a Port called Yapapatuna (Yapa Patuna) ("Port Yapa" in English) this city is now known as Yapanaya (Jafna) which was derived from the name Yapapatuna[citation needed].

Currently Vijitapura is a town situated near Ratnapura in Sri Lanka and 20 km from Colombo Vijitapura is between Batticaloa and Badulla and Galle, behind this beautiful area of "We" river, which is heading to "Kauu River". Vijitapura is very proud to provide the best school which is well known "R/Batugedara Maha vidyalaya".

Vijitapura has alway been popular for the gem trade and attracts tourists and gem buyers from the local area and international specialty buyers from Thailand. The main income of this economic area is the gem market and gem-related business since its earliest years.

Vijitapura's economy booms with money from this industry. The rapidly changing and outstanding building changes attract new residence to the area. The Vijitapura School improved and became popular in every corner in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

The Vijitapura Urban Development Council was created in the 1940s. It was succeeded by the Vijitapura Urban Council.
