Vijaysingh Madhavji Merchant pronunciation (born October 12, 1911 in Bombay; died October 27, 1987, Bombay) was an Indian cricketer. His first-class career batting average was an extraordinary 71.64, putting him second only to the incomparable Don Bradman. In India's domestic Ranji Trophy competition, he fared even better, averaging 98.75 in his 47 innings.
He played in ten Test matches, and made his highest score of 154 in the last, against England at Delhi in 1951/52. However, a shoulder injury sustained whilst fielding in this game was sufficiently serious that Merchant was forced to retire with immediate effect. His previous test innings, five years earlier at The Oval in August 1946, had also been a century (128)
Merchant was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1937.
