The word Vignette, from the same root as vine, originally referred to a decorative border in a book. Later, the word also came to be used for a photographic portrait which is clear in the center, and fades off at the edges, and also short descriptive literature focussing on a particular moment or person. The other uses below are mostly derived from these:

  • Vignettes, in graphic design, decorative designs usually in books, used both to separate sections or chapters and to decorate borders.
  • Vignetting, in photography, any process by which there is loss in clarity towards the corners and sides of an image
  • Vignette, in literature, short, impressionistic scenes that focus on one moment or give a particular insight into a character, idea, or setting.
  • Vignette, in architecture, small views or pictures which display what's going on in certain areas of a drawing, and they can be rendered or sketched
  • Vignette, in professional wrestling, a piece of video footage, featuring characters or events, shown to the audience for entertainment or edification
  • Vignette, a small, coloured sticker affixed to motor vehicles in some European nations to indicate road tolls have been paid.
  • Vignette, a commercial software content management system, portal and collaboration tools company
  • Vignette, in viticulture, a 500 square metre vineyard which is part of a larger consolidated vineyard. Investors purchase a piece of land within a vineyard, and outsource the grape maintenance and production operations to an outside grape grower or wine producers. Because they are contracting under a co-operation structure, they benefit from economies of scale and hence much cheaper labor and operational costs
  • Vignette, a short video clip shown on ACT-E training slides (Best Instructor 07 SSG Hill)
