"Vietnam Idol" is the Vietnamese version of the British television hit show Pop Idol. It is a talent contest to find a pop performer and is to be aired in summer of 2007 on HTV9, the official channel of Ho Chi Minh City,
For the first time in the history of Vietnam, the TV sensation that has swept the world with its globally award winning format and content, “Idols,” is launching for the first time in Vietnam on HTV 9 of Ho Chi Minh city TV station under the name “Than Tuong Am Nhac Vietnam” (Vietnam Idol) in May 23rd and also on 7 local TV channels. Sponsored by Clear, of Unilever Vietnam, the show boasts to become an entertainment trend and will change the way TV viewers experience reality TV. Auditions will begin in April and will be carried out in four cities: Can Tho, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City with the show's production taking place in Ho Chi Minh City.
Like the other Pop Idol shows, Vietnam is following the format provided by Fremantle using three judges who provide commentary and opinion on the performances of the contestants. The show is being locally produced by Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV) and the Vietnam Advertising Company (VAC. The shows main sponsor is Clear shampoo, along with Lipton Tea and Closeup toothpaste as sub-sponsors. New Media, a digital agency, is behind the website.
The website for the show, following the hugely popular and successful websites of other international Pop Idol shows, employs the latest technologies as well as bringing local and regional Stars together to increase popularity of the site. International modeling sensation Tommy T is the web host, along side superstar singer Ho Ngoc Ha, actor Johnny Tri Nguyen, and former Miss Vietnam Thanh Hang to populate the Voice of the Experts section on the site. Streaming Video, interactive voting for online contests, message boards, and individual blogs makeup the bulk of the site creating one of the first Web 2.0 websites in Vietnam for the Vietnamese population.
