In 1985, through a technical tie-up with Toshiba Corporation of Japan, Videocon International Limited launched India's first Color Television. Today, Videocon International Ltd., the flagship company of the Videocon Group, is India's leading manufacturer of Consumer Electronic products.
Beyond India, Videocon is now a global player, acknowledged by the world. It is the first Indian company to win the prestigious CE approval for exporting its Color TV to Europe. Videocon is now entering world market with its operations in the Middle East, Europe, Indonesia and South Africa .
Videocon is the largest seller of Big Screen Colour Televisions in India and exports more than 1 million Colour Televisions.
In June 2005, Videocon Group India acquired Thomson SA's colour picture tube manufacturing business for €240m.
Now, Videocon International Ltd. has been merged with Videocon Industries Ltd., the oil and gas Exploration and Production company of the Videocon Group to form Videocon Industries Ltd. This company has a market capitalisation of almost Rs. 90 billion or Rs.9000 crore ($2 Billion), with a promoter holding of 71%.
In September 2006, Videocon made a bid to takeover the Korean company Daewoo Electronics for around 675 million won. The Korean electronics company, despite bankruptcy, is resisting takeover with support from Woori Bank to finance the company further.
